As a further word on the Scientology ethics conditions, mention should be made of how Scientologists use statistical measurement to eliminate the guesswork of applying conditions formulas. Simply put, a statistic is a basic tool for the measurement of survival potential. A statistic is a number or amount compared to an earlier number or amount of the same thing. Statistics refer to the quantity of work done or the value of it and are the only sound measure of any production or any activity. Although one normally thinks of statistics in terms of, say, items sold or payment received, anything can be analyzed in terms of statistics – from gardening to golf. Moreover, only by monitoring statistics can one be certain that he is pinpointing the proper condition, whether bettering or worsening, and not relying on rumor or hearsay. Thus, with an understanding of how to compile, graph and compare statistics, the Scientologist is amply equipped to determine exactly what condition an activity is in, and thus exactly what steps he must take in order to better that condition.
